Introduction to IDPA  (International Defensive Pistol Association)

Come join us for an introduction to IDPA on  Sept 7, 9AM.  We’ll start with a short briefing on safety standards, range commands, target engagement and match scoring.  We’ll discuss preferred equipment for an actual match. We’ll cover the basics of a range set up.  Then we’ll actually engage targets on this practice range.  Shooters can run the course as many times as time and energy allows.  Bring your favorite handgun, ammo and holster.

Our Belton Gun Club has been hosting IDPA events for some time.  Our August event drew nearly 60 competitors from all skill levels.  The new competition bays set up very well for these matches.

As the title indicates, the IDPA matches simulate self-defense scenarios and real-life encounters.  IDPA was founded in 1996 as a response to the desires of shooters worldwide. The organization now boasts membership of more than 25,000, including members in 70 foreign countries.

There is no charge for our introductory event.  Any skill level is quite welcome.  Our principle objective is to have fun as you develop and refine personal defense skills.  Hope to see you there, and maybe in future competitions, too.

    Cowboy Style Action Match

We will have two new surprises for the match. The first one will be a new prop, we have built an outhouse that is fit for a king, 5x8 inside with a front window that is 4x5. The other surprise is that we will be shooting three matches, Cowboy Action, Road to Perdition and Wild Bunch all at the same time. The Wild Bunch will be shooting the same sequence as the Road to Perdition and Cowboy Action. We will allow the basic calibers for the rifle rather than limit it to .45 only. This is a trial to see how it works and if we want to keep it going along with the Road to Perdition on the fifth weekends. If you have any questions about it please let me know.

Registration will open at 8:30 and we will start shooting shortly after 9:30

The official Steel Challenge rulebook (https://uspsa.org/viewer/SCSA_Rule_Book.pdf) is recommended reading for anyone unfamiliar with Steel Challenge, particular emphasis being placed on Chapters 1, 4, 5, and 8. They are no more than a few pages long each and cover essential safety rules and range procedures. Do not get yourself disqualified because you didn't understand the safety rules! The appendices cover division rules, so your equipment questions can be answered there, as well as in Chapter 3 for more general guidelines.

    Defensive Pistol 1

The goal of this class is to instruct students on proper safety, gun handling mechanics, and to significantly improve their defensive pistol shooting skills.  They will learn drills that increase their defensive accuracy and speed, over time, as they practice on their own or with a friend.  The ultimate goal is for the student to be able to pass the FBI Qualification Test.  While not required, this class is intended for students who already have their CWP and are serious about concealed carry.  The instructor has taught basic pistol, concealed carry, and personal protection classes for nearly 24 years and is certified by the NRA, and the states of Maryland and South Carolina.  The class is approximately 5 hours and cost $50.

Students are required to bring:  a defensive pistol, at least 250 rounds of ammunition, strong side or appendix holster (holster MUST cover the trigger guard), at least 3 magazines or 2 speed loaders if using a revolver, eye & ear protection, ability to reliably shoot paper plates at 7 yards and a good attitude.  Students are recommended to bring:  a hat, double magazine pouch, snap caps (for malfunction drills), a towel, water and food.  Students must NOT bring: a cross draw, shoulder or ankle holster.  Class capacity is 8 persons and pre-registration is required.
